Newsletter – Om Malik – Why we need to slow time and scale down

I came across Om Malik, the former web and technology writer who’s now a partner at True Ventures, for the first time about a year ago when he was interviewed on Hodinkee Radio (more on this in another post). Since then I’ve become more familiar with his work thanks in large part to his blog and newsletters which I encourage everyone to subscribe to. I really liked one from early this year and his second point made me think of two things.

Go analog: In this digital age, it makes sense for us to be analog. It allows us to control the pace of time and allows us to create an environment that helps bring sanity, quality, and relative ease on a daily basis. For example, go to museums, find places to have coffee or dine, where they know your name.

Firstly, I’m glad that my wife suggested we stopped charging our mobiles phones overnight on our bedside tables in the bedroom and we bought an analog Braun alarm clock instead. It’s changed our lives for the better.

Secondly, the last sentence reminded me that we tend to go to places where they know your name, like the theme song from the TV show ‘Cheers’. Isn’t that what life’s about? The human connections you make away from the Internet and social media.
