The other day I was looking for the definition of ‘confide’ when I came across this image and the Wikipedia entry for ‘confidence’. I was struck at how strong the young girl looked. Here’s an excerpt which I liked:
Confidence has a common meaning of a certainty about handling something, such as work, family, social events, or relationships. Some have ascribed confidence as a state of being certain either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Confidence comes from a latin word ‘fidere’ which means “to trust”; therefore, having a self-confidence is having trust in one’s self. […] Confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as those without it may fail or not try because they lack it and those with it may succeed because they have it rather than because of an innate ability.
This has reminded me how important and powerful it is to have confidence. I was especially interested to learn that the word comes from the latin ‘to trust‘ – to believe in yourself, to try without the fear of failing. Unfortunately this is something I lack but hopefully I can work at building it up.
When I was writing this draft I came across this post on AVC.com, a blog I started following recently, where he tells an interesting personal story about self confidence and at the end he says:
There is a fine line between self-confidence and recklessness and I have been able to project the former without landing on the latter in my career. I think you need at least a little bit of the former in business. Without it, you won’t be able to go for it when you need to go for it. And if you don’t go for it, you won’t get it.
