Website – Vitsoe – Planned Obsolescence

A few years ago I walked past the old Vitsoe shop on Duke St. in London and a sign in their window caught my eye. It said ‘Sorry, no sale’. Today is Black Friday and I’m reminded of their approach of living better, with less, that lasts longer. I wholeheartedly agree and I strive to live more like that.

Here’s an excerpt from a video they made back in 2011 “to address the underlying issues that are at the heart of Black Friday and the culture of discounts.” Unfortunately it’s even more relevant today.

Planned obsolescence. From cars to light bulbs, computers and furniture, companies deliberately design products with a limited life so you have to buy the same thing again. Sales feast on obsolescence. Clearing stock to make room for the next generation of obsolete stock. Companies have successfully planted in the consumer the desire to own something a little newer, a little shinier, a little sooner than necessary. But what if we choose to design and use products that last a lifetime and stand against planned obsolescence? We can’t tell you how to live your life but we can tell you how we live ours.
