“No es más feliz el que más tiene, sino el que menos necesita.”
This is one of the phrases my mum instilled in my sister and I when we were growing up and it’s one of my favourites. I’m frequently reminded of it and try to live by it. It roughly translates to ‘He / she who is happiest is not the one who has the most, but who needs the least‘.
I recently came across another quote from Shane Parrish, founder of Farnam Street, which I think conveys a similar principle:
“To be content with nothing is to have everything”.
Over the last few years, my wife and I have been decluttering our home of clothes, books… giving to charity, gifting to family and friends or selling. Trying to focus on enjoying the pieces which we regularly use and love, giving up what is superfluous. Once again, living with less, but better.
