I’m a big fan of Monty Don. I only really ‘discovered’ him on TV over the last year or two but since then I’ve admired the way he carries himself and the passion he has for gardening. I recently listened to his Desert Island Discs episode from back in July 2006 and I learnt more about him as he opened up and shared his experiences and struggles in an honest way. I’m now an even bigger fan.
Last weekend I watched episode 7 of his TV show ‘Around the World in 80 Gardens‘ where he goes to Italy, Morocco and Spain. It was when he was visiting the Medina in Marrakesh that he said:
32 mins. 16 secs. – They’re known as the secret gardens of Marrakesh because they’re invariably concealed from the outside gaze behind modest entrances. In Islam, any display of opulence or wealth wouldn’t only be arrogant but might also diminish your neighbour. So the exteriors are always low key and the interior private.
It struck me that humility and modesty are very big lessons which transcend culture, nationality, religion, etc. but which we seem to have forgotten nowadays. Social media has given rise to more and more people flashing and flaunting their wealth and for this to be seen favourably.
The idea of thinking about your neighbour is also very important. To behave in a way that is in accordance with your principles at the same time as being considerate with the people around you.
I think many conflicts would be resolved if we remembered these points.
