Quote

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

I saw this quote printed on a piece a paper in my office the other day. I had never heard it before and it didn’t have any attribution. Since then, I’ve learnt that it’s frequently credited online to Sir Winston Churchill although some say that’s incorrect. Whoever said or wrote it, it really doesn’t matter, it’s the meaning that is important.

Let’s break it down: we make a living by what we get (salary, possessions), but we make a life by what we give (share, care). It’s interesting to me that the former seems to refer to nouns (physical things) whereas the latter refers to verbs (your actions). It’s not what you have but what you can do for others. I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently and hope to change accordingly.
