Recently when watching Newsnight on TV, one of the journalists used an idiom, or a proverb in this case, which I’d never heard before.
From Wikipedia I learnt that it means if something is good for one person, it should be equally as good for another as well. Its origin seems to come from an earlier “what’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander“. Literally, what is good for a female goose is equally good for a male goose (gander).
From dictionary.com I learnt that it can also be taken as a call for equal treatment, specifically against double standards and hypocrisy. Historically it was used for gender equality to say that, what’s good enough for a man is good enough for a woman. Now it is now also used to express the idea that, if one person or group is held accountable or subjected to scrutiny in some way, so should another.
It’s frequently seen in political and social contexts, especially where there are perceived power imbalances or significant differences between people.
Like previous quotes I posted, I think it’s very apt for the times we live in.
