Podcast – Desert Island Discs – Lord Alf Dubs

Lord Alf Dubs has been in the news in recent days speaking about the Labour government’s new plans to tackle migration. He was a guest on Desert Island Discs over the summer and I found it very interesting to hear about his incredible life story. During the episode he talks about one of the things he loves doing the most and this excerpt stayed with me:

Min 51:15 – I have a love affair with the Lake District. I’m a keen hill walker and I’ve spent quite a lot of time walking in the Lake District. A thousand feet up, the problems of the world feel very small. At two-thousand feet up, the problems are tiny. At three-thousand feet up, what problems? It’s very therapeutic as well as being utterly pleasureable. And there’s a camaraderie about hill walkers. We’re all friends and we do this together and it’s great.

It made me think of the importance of being out in nature and exercising regularly, and always without the distraction of your phone. Before posting this, I saw I had another draft with a saying about meditation which is often paraphrased to:

“You should consider spending 20 minutes each day sitting in nature, unless you are busy, then you should sit for an hour.”
