Film – Rams – Dieter Rams on logos

As a follow up to my original post about the Rams documentary, I watched a short clip of him which reminded me of his view on logos:

24 min. 23 secs. – I didn’t want the Braun logo on the front. It was on the back. That was sufficient.

The constant battle, which I eventually lost with the last CEO, was because he wanted the Braun logo to be larger all the time.

When you’re someplace new and have to introduce yourself, or enter a room and say, “I’m so-and-so.” You don’t shout. Please, you should do it quietly.

Just imagine, if you have many products – and we wanted more and more – if they all shouted, “I’m Braun!” That will irritate people.

I wholeheartedly agree and have long held the same view. Even when I was a child, I’d unstitch the label from some of my clothes as I preferred them without logos. I guess that’s why my favourite brands have very small logos or none at all on their products.

I think he uses a great simile, to bring to life what it would be like if you were to introduce yourself shouting. You wouldn’t want to be the centre of attention, right? In the same way, if the product is good, it’ll speak for itself without the need to shout.
