When I listened to this episode from June 2025 I remember the excerpt which stayed with me from his long conversation (and I made a note of), was when he spoke about his mental health and said something I’ve felt many times over the years:
31:27 – One of the things I’ve noticed is that when it comes to mental health, you do stuff that works, and it’s proven to work for you mentally, and then for some reason, you just stop doing it. You just go ‘I feel good if I spend some time reflecting, or if I run, or if I do a bit of reading on this, or if I do some breathing exercises. That makes me feel better. Oh I’ve done that every day for a week and I’m really feeling better. Shall I just stop? Yeah’. A few weeks later I wonder why I feel so much worse than I did. Yeah I think I’ll do that.
I notice how much I’ve done that, again and again. I think I know the things that would make me feel better and would probably improve my mental and physical health (exercising, medidating, reading…), but for some reason I don’t do them regularly. It’s as if I don’t want to help myself, as if I’m on a ‘self-destruct’ mode.
I think the key to keep in mind is spending more time in the present, doing things (outside your head), and less time thinking, being idle (inside).
