Remembering Dad

My sister shared an Instagram reel with my Mum and I the other day and texted “Dad always used to say this to us!!!“. In it a man gave the following advice…

At a party if you’ve forgotten the name of the person you’re speaking to and you need to get to their name, you can try this little trick, supposedly popularised by the late Sir Noel Coward.

You say, “I’m so sorry remind me of your name.”

They say their first name, “Abigail”.

And you say, “No Abigail, I know your first name I meant your last name”.

It came as a surprise because I’d never heard anyone else mention this before and I suppose I just assumed it was something he had come up with. I don’t know whether the link with Sir Noel Coward is true but it made me think about where my Dad would’ve heard it first, probably during his time living in the UK.

Today marks 14 years since my Dad passed away. Yesterday evening I remembered I was 28 when he died and I realised he hasn’t been around for a third of my life now. That was shock because I feel he was part of a much bigger portion than that and a third seems like a long time. I think it just goes to show what a big, positive presence he was and and also how fast time goes by.
